Abstract

This study aims to improve the writing skills of fifth-grade students at SDN 31 Tumampua by applying the whole language approach. This research employs classroom action research (CAR) using the Kemmis and Taggart model, which includes four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through student activity observation sheets, writing skills tests, and documentation. The results indicate that applying the whole language approach effectively improves students' writing skills. In the first cycle, the average writing skill score showed that 6 students (30%) achieved mastery, while 14 students (70%) did not. After reflection and improvements in the second cycle, 18 students (90%) achieved mastery, with only 2 students (10%) not meeting the criteria. The classical mastery level reached 90%, meeting the predetermined success criteria. Thus, the whole language approach proved effective in improving the writing skills of fifth-grade students at SDN 31 Tumampua.
